When President Teddy Roosevelt made Culebra a National Wildlife Refuge he preserved many birds for us. We have the Gray Kingbird (Pitirre), which has learned to eat grasshoppers you throw at the call of their song (pitirre-pitirre). We have Mocking Birds that imitate other birds songs. The national bird of Puerto Rico is the Reinita also known as the Bananaquit or Sugarbird. They chirp til their lungs explode to tell you (give me some sugar!) Then there are those tiny aggressive aerobatic Hummingbirds with their exotic coloration. Oh! Biggest of all lovers Falcons make love at every branch. Hawks fluttering as they watch a mouse out of his burrow. There are also the Exotics like the Mangrove Canary and the Mangrove Cuckoo. The scavengers like the Pearly-eyed Thrasher and the Palomas pecking at the little fruit tress and their tiny cousin the Turtle Dove walking the streets. And best part is that you can watch these beautiful birds from the comfort of your own private terrace,
