SAIL FISH, DOLPHIN FISH, BARRACUDA, LOBSTER, GROUPER BONEFISH
Fishing is by far the oldest and most liked of all activities enjoyed on this beautiful island. First because the primal economic base for its' inhabitants at the time of colonization was just that...Expertise was passed down the generations. Second because CULEBRA has one of the largest REEF systems of any Island in the Caribbean coupled with a series of BAYS, INLETS and the mother of all biological starts; lots of MANGROVES! (TARPON and SNOOK).
The preferred type of fishing is hand-line bottom fishing anywhere from docks, shallow bays or small skiffs. The elusive SILK SNAPPER and QUEEN SNAPPER can be found at 100 to 200 fathoms. The old timers did a lot of trap fishing and there are still some of them around but not many. It takes a lot of old fashion perseverance and muscle unless you have a modern fishing boat and even then it is very heavy gear.
The Locals do a lot of spear-fishing, as detrimental as it is to the bottom fish population. If the use of scuba while practicing spear fishing could be prohibited it would give fish a fighting chance. FREE DIVE fishing...The old fashioned way.
We will see what the future brings. Light Tackle on the North Shore (Atlantic Ocean) brings lots of KINGFISH, BLACK TUNA,WAHOO, DORADO, SAILFISH and the occasional YELLOW FINS, on the South Veiques Sound lots of BARRACUDA. If you are lucky enough to get on a large yacht and make it to the South Drop (Caribbean Sea) 10 miles miles off or the North Drop 20 miles off then you are on the middle of the BLUE MARLIN ALLEY where all the world records come from. But if you are one of those 3 lb. test guys on a FLY the flats are the menu for you with its' mature BONEFISH & PERMIT population.
